Chevron Dresser Tutorial and other fun spray painted furniture

things i’ve learned

  1.  ALWAYS ALWAYS USE A PRIMER (i normally use Krylon spray primer but on the drawers in this chevron dresser i used a paint roller with kilz paint)
  2. DUST AWAY ANY COBWEBS, DIRT, FOOD (my furniture always tends to have all 3…especially the latter)
  3. REMOVE ALL HARDWARE and put right into a plastic bag….i can’t afford to lose anymore screws than i already have …(i genetically thank my mom for this~)
  4. LAY DOWN A DROP CLOTH or spray in the grass….(once you mow, the spray painted grass will disappear…i’ve learned from experience….DOES NOT HAPPEN ON THE DECK OR GARAGE FLOOR)
  5. ALWAYS SAND YOUR FURNITURE BEFORE YOU START …this helps the paint adhere SCUFF IT UP!
  6. SPRAY ABOUT 10 INCHES FROM THE SURFACE…using a back and forth sweeping method
  7. ALLOW YOUR PRIMER TO DRY COMPLETELY…i’ve always just waited about 10 minutes and it’s worked for me
  8. DON’T BUY CRAPPY SPRAY PAINT….i’ve found Krylon and Rustoleum to be the best
  9. SPRAY WITH A POLYURETHANE SEALER when finished and allow to completely dry before putting on hardware

*i used acrylic paint applied with a sponge brush on these drawers instead of spray paint

To get Chevron Stripes

  1. A LEVELER is a must to get straight lines…i use my leveler all the time when creating….you won’t be sorry you bought one
  2. i only did the chevron on the top drawers of my dresser….draw a line (with your leveler straight smack in the middle of the drawer
  3. with your leveler mark off every 2 inches on the middle line with a small dot
  4. using your leveler (SEE, I TOLD YOU YOU WILL USE IT ALOT) draw diagonal lines (my leveler has a diagonal option…love it…makes this project super easy)
  5. with a paint brush and acrylic paint, paint in your lines….skipping every other

when dry, put back together….i used fun knobs from Hobby Lobby….altho….as you can see, i’m one short….it’s that whole math/numbers thing again

Here are some other things we’ve spray painted …the possibilities are endless

my little blue end table

my little green end table

a yellow floor lamp

my bathroom vanity

table and chairs for pool patio at the lake

an old dresser and headboard

one of my favorite dressers of all time

Thanks so much for this great information! I have an old antique school desk that I am going to turn into a flower plant holder and now I know what I have to do! You inspire me all the time!
