The 1st day of Summer starts with Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins and a list of Boredom Busters to get us through the summer!

The first day of summer started yesterday and my little Noodle slept until 915….she knows how to start it off right…then i served her breakfast in bed~ahhhh the life of a 6 year old! She made a request for Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins ~and what do you know…i had 3 ripe bananas sitting in our fruit basket…..meant to be? i should say so~

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup vanilla yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup mashed ripe bananas (i used 3 bananas)
  • 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:

Mix all dry ingredients together, fold in egg, yogurt and vanilla then add bananas and chocolate chips…pour into muffin tin and bake for 22-25 min or until toothpick comes out clean

I have a child that has always been good about entertaining herself (must be an only child thing) ~but as her 2nd year of school came quickly to end, i’m noticing more and more that she misses the social aspect of friends and playtime….so i borrowed this idea from my friend Becky at her blog Becky’s Buzzings and created our own summer list of “BOREDOM BUSTERS” what a great idea….~I tried to come up with things that didn’t always require my help….because it is my busy season…..and 14 hour paint days are awaiting

  • paint a picture with shaving cream on the patio window
  • make a person’s face using only food items you find yourself in the kitchen (examples, chocolate chips, marshmellows, dry cereal) then leave it outside for the birds…or in our case, our evil black cat)
  • build a fort and read stories inside to your dogs
  • indoor dance party
  • give your webkinz a bath and let them sun dry on the deck
  • Measuring tapes (send ‘em on a scavenger hunt to find something that is 4”, 6”, 12”, etc.)
  • go through all your color crayons and organize them into colors…make a rainbow with them…..(i know this sounds crazy, but she loves to organzie)
  • take Wrigley (our puppy) outside and play fetch
  • make homemade playdough
  • send a card to grandma Moo
  • suprise mimi and boompa some morning with coffee and muffins (muffins must be homemade by us….you can choose what kind)
  • walk to hyvee and pick up a FEW groceries (you’ll have to help mom carry them home)
  • trace a life size creation of yourself on a piece of paper and then color it in
  • make a list of movies you’d like to see over the summer (make sure and pick new ones…not just old ones…use Netflix as a cheat sheet)
  • pack a picnik and go across the street with a blanket and find cloud shapes and cuddle with mommy (preferably a breakfast picnik)
  • make fridge magnets out of your drawings …here’s the tutorial from Brassy Apple http://brassyapple.blogspot.com/2009/03/diy-fridge-magnets-and-pushpins.html
  • make another rainbow cake RECIPE HERE
  • celebrate Chloe’s Birthday on or around the 4th of July…i think it may be her last …we can make her a birthday banner and a big bowl of popcorn….(that’s her all time favorite) ~don’t forget to sing to her
  • have a friend over and make rainbow cupcake~RECIPE HERE
  • suprise daddy at work with flowers and take him out to lunch…his choice
  • make faux dirt pots using ice cream, clay pots, crushed oreos and gummy worms (i used to make these for my brother when he was young and he loved them)
  • go out and pull weeds and pick up garden
  • Colored noodle collage (put noodles in a ziplock bag, add a few drops of food coloring and smoosh them around until the noodles are coated. Let them dry on a cookie sheet before using)
  • visit the farmer’s market downtown on saturday morning….you can pick out one vegetable that we will make with dinner…your choice
  • spend one whole day taking pictures every hour ….on the hour (while we are awake….i can see this one quickly turn against me at bedtime)
  • pitch a tent on the deck and spend the night in in (first we’ll need a tent….i love NOT camping…maybe we’ll borrow one)
  • this one is for daddy….no promises….and one major IF…..”IF” we get a tent….go camping…..for ONE night…preferably YOGI BEAR and mom would prefer a cabin
  • go outside and make 20 different TIC TAC TOE games on the sidewalk…..try to beat your mom and dad
  • go for a walk on the bike trails
  • make a collage from old magazines
  • wash the car …not at a car wash….in the driveway
  • spend one meal singing only…everything you say has to be in song
  • paint our tree stump outside into a rainbow
  • write a letter or draw a picture and send it to all 3 of your cousins
  • have an at-home spa day with mommy…homemade hair treatments, face masks and pedicures…you paint my nails…i’ll paint yours
  • learn how to ride our bike without training wheels
  • make fresh strawberry lemonade
  • go to the drive-in
  • try to read at least 5 chapter books before the summer is over
  • go play miniature golf with daddy
  • make rainbow jello
  • Udder painting (put paint and water in a rubber glove, tie a knot, poke some holes, and start “milking”)
  • head to our cabin in Okoboji and have a cannonball contest….CANNONBALL!

That should be a start to last us a little while…..do you have any ideas….please share!
