i think i know you pretty well now…and yes you COULD be my mom.
i don’t have an answer for you..but i know i am not inside those big ol churches, i see the light in SO many other ways.

  2. Angie says:

Aren’t they big to fit all the people in them????? Imagin how big they would be if everyone went to church.

  3. Tama says:

Several thoughts. History proves that people like pretty things. We like to stay at pretty hotels if affordable, etc. Possibly large churches were (and are) built to entice people to join THEIR church. They might think it shows they are a “successful” church and people want to be a part of that. Ancient times state that the priests felt the need to build bigger and better to glorify God and Jesus. Religious leaders have never taken care of the poor in the manner that needed to be. Thus, people have learned what a great gift (to their higher power and to themselves), giving to the needy is. Wish more would experience that gift of giving and love for their fellow beings. Art Moms LLC does a great job of sharing their time and income and getting the word out about a need. Thank You.

Great comment mom! I love how we can all agree to disagree on that! Jerime and I found a church that we absolutely LOVED for over a year…they did community work, preached thru positivity and then it started taking a turn….the pastor started talking about all the THOUSANDS (and I mean THOUSANDS) of dollars they were going to spend on putting in another door (and the door that was there was completely usable and only about 15 feet to the left?) and new carpet, and new chairs, and paint….who needs all new to worship? not me! also, they would show in their weekly program how much they received from tithing…it was over $50,000 when we left….IN ONE WEEK! My husband has a great point on this….if they receive that much….we want to see them tithe 10% of that back into the community! ~help all of God’s people..what a great way to show people the way! On the flip side, we found a church called Ransom…they worship from the Carmike movie theater and instead of putting money into a church, they do TONS of community work in S.F….gotta LOVE that!

    Big churches = Big turnoff.
Jesus was a simple man, a carpenter, who more often than not walked barefoot while handing out to others. Are we not to live as he lived, giving to others and not wanting for ourselves more than what is needed for a simple survival?
A church is simply shelter to worship in. It can be a single room, small enough for one or large enough for one hundred; it doesn’t have to be a cavernous building where you don’t even know the person sitting next to you (much less the hundreds in the nose-bleed section behind you!). Music comes from the heart, if an organ or piano is present that just adds to the melody; it doesn’t have to be a 150-pipe organ. Light comes from our soul, if a single light bulb or simple fixutre is present that just adds to the glow; it doesn’t have to be a massive chandelier.
We were taught to serve others, why have so many lost that?

  6. Erin ridley says:

I have attended the ransom and they are awesome! I don’t get the need for huge churches when churches, like the ransom prove that you don’t need a bigger better building to make a difference in the community! While the big churches are pretty to look at I think the money would be put to better use going to help the community!

  7. Julie says:

Beautiful big churches are intended to glorify and honor God. They are large in size to ensure that when all the lost sheep are brought into the fold there is adequate room for all. The problem nowadays, though, is that churches are not doing a good job of bringing in the lost sheep, so-to-speak. So pews that should be full are empty. Poor that need to be served are not. I don’t have the answer for organized religion that fails to get out of the comfort zone of their church but that should not stop its individual members from doing their part in taking care of the poor. When I decide how to allocate my charitable donations my money always, without fail, goes to serving those in need, especially children.

  8. Jerime says:

When I get invited to someone’s house that has a lot of money with big and beautiful things I get very intimidated. Why are churches doing the same? Jesus did not come for the healthy and the happy he came for the sick, the poor, and the sad. So if one of these people wanted to come to a big fancy church wouldn’t they feel intimidated also? If we are trying to attract people with big and beautiful churches what type of people are they? Are they more concerned with outside appearences and care less of what inside matters? If that is the case you have a beautiful church that could be ugly on the inside.

I couldn’t agree more with Julie that the lost sheep are not in the church they are in the casino’s, in the strip bars, even in your office. You do not have to talk about Jesus all the time to these people but saying “hi”, opening a door, smiling at someone and being kind radiates Jesus from you. However, when you are in a group of christians in renews your faith, but what does that do for the lost sheep. There is a reason you go to church and is because of God not the church. So wherever you go to church if it is beautiful or not make sure you are celebrating “Christianity” not “Churchianity”.

  9. pennie ogden says:

wow jer…awesome…couldn’t agree with you more …this almost brought a tear to my eye …i think money is getting to be the new “jesus” or “God” worship …how sad …churches can be big to hold all the people, but why do they need neon, flashing signs and huge, impressive architecture? don’t get it

  10. Ashley Watterson Howell says:

Its all about the image to most of these people. They show their friends that they go to this huge church and have the perfect family and this perfect life, when in reality they are just lost children. Their big church doesn’t get them any closer to God. There are certain churches that need to expand to accomadate the growing congregation (which is really incredible) but just because you go to a big church doesn’t mean you are a better christian.

  11. Jenn says:

This is a very thought provoking question….I feel the churches should be big enough to fit many people in, however I don’t beleive they should be so lavish. I agree with Jermie though…when I am invited to someone’s house and it looks more like somthing out of a magazine rather then a home I feel uncomfortable. When I am in a church that looks the same way I feel intimitated and judged. I love the small church feeling with lots of room to worship.

  12. Sharon Edelman says:

Some of my best “church” services didn’t happen in a building. They occured on a beautiful calm morning- sitting in a boat with my family trying to catch a fish for supper. Nature provided the music for me to reflect on all of the wonderful things I was grateful for. The fish might not have been biting but the memories are priceless.

Large Old Churches amaze me. The beautiful stained glass, the marble, the brick- the history that it has. A good choir and uplifting message inspires me to do good for others who need it (they may not always be poor, they may simply need someone to say hello to them)

New-Large, Cold, Modern churches turn me off. I can’t believe people support the structure and not the message.

  13. Emily says:

I can honestly say I’ve never felt God in a big, fancy church. I’ve felt him in soup kitchens, on Habitat sites, at a boarding school for hurting and abandoned kids. I’ve felt Him in all these places where we’ve had each other, some not even allowing a “church” space. If long ago the purpose of the building was that bigger and better represented a closeness to God (maybe it worked for the carpenters?), now it seems to be more of a distraction. Great to have the space to bring the people in but we can’t forget about bringing God to the people. It can’t just be about the space. That’s the worst example of form over function. I’d be more impressed with a church’s reputation for doing God’s work versus being a “mega church” with no concept of service.

  14. Ashley Conner says:

I have always wondered why churches need all those extra things, The church her in town can barely raise enough money to heat and cool the place but that doesn’t make the members any less devoted. Thank your for putting this question on everyone’s mind i agree that 10% of the money raised should go back to the community or into the actual people of the church

  15. Trisha Berens says:

I think a church should be big enough to house all those who come to worship there, but not so big that you loose that close warm feeling. I also feel that some churches do spend to much on that “showy” factor and that money could be used for much better things.

  16. Emma Clark says:

    Agree

  17. I feel the exact same way. I have always wondered why the people preaching the loudest about Christianity are the least likely to live the Christian life…which is exactly what they’re telling others to do.

  18. Michele McNeely says:

I agree with you Pennie!! No matter HOW large, no matter HOW beautiful and no matter WHAT the inside looks like……….this is NOT what Christ ever felt was the most important thing as Christians that we should be thinking about. Reminds me of one choosing the correct goblet that Christ used and thought it was the most ornate and beautiful one in the bunch when in reality it was just a plain and simple goblet that He used. God/Christ is more concerned about what is INSIDE us as Christians………..not what the world sees OUTSIDE!! :o )

  20. Shannon says:

It is very comforting for me to see so many feel as I do, was really thinking was just myself that felt this way. To me the wonder of God is seen in a child’s smile and we do not need a huge church to see that, just a simple building to keep us safe.
